Tiger Moths and Allies (Subfamily Arctiinae)
Arctiinae is a large and diverse subfamily of moths within the family Erebidae (Superfamily Noctuoidea, Order Lepidoptera), commonly known as the tiger moths, lichen moths, and wasp moths. The subfamily comprises more than 11,000 described species distributed on every continent except Antarctica, with the greatest diversity occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. Members inhabit tropical rainforests, temperate forests, grasslands, shrublands, wetlands, deserts, alpine regions, agricultural landscapes, parks, and gardens.
Moths of the subfamily Arctiinae are generally small to medium-sized, although some tropical species are relatively large. Adults possess a slender to moderately robust body with broad wings that often display striking patterns and vivid coloration. Wing colors range from white, yellow, orange, and red to blue, green, black, and metallic hues, frequently combined in bold stripes, spots, or bands. Many species exhibit aposematic (warning) coloration, advertising their chemical defenses, while others mimic bees, wasps, or toxic insects to deter predators.
Adults are predominantly nocturnal, though numerous species are active during the day or at dusk. Most possess a well-developed coiled proboscis and feed on floral nectar, tree sap, or other sugar-rich liquids. Many species have specialized tympanal organs capable of detecting the ultrasonic echolocation calls of bats, enabling them to perform evasive flight maneuvers. Some tiger moths can even produce ultrasonic clicks that interfere with bat echolocation or serve as warning signals.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Caterpillars are commonly known as woolly bears because many are densely covered with long hairs (setae), which provide protection against predators. Larvae feed on a wide variety of plants, lichens, mosses, algae, and detritus, depending on the species. Some species sequester toxic compounds from their host plants, retaining these chemicals into adulthood as a defense against predators. Pupation usually occurs within a silken cocoon, often incorporating larval hairs for additional protection.
The subfamily includes several well-known tribes and groups, such as Arctiini (tiger moths), Lithosiini (lichen moths), Syntomini (wasp moths), and Amerilini. Representative genera include Asota, Creatonotos, Utetheisa, Amata, Cyana, Spilosoma, and Lemyra. Many species are admired for their brilliant colors and remarkable defensive adaptations.
Ecologically, Arctiinae moths are important herbivores during the larval stage and contribute to pollination as nectar-feeding adults. Their caterpillars influence plant and lichen communities, while both larvae and adults provide food for birds, bats, reptiles, spiders, predatory insects, and parasitoids. Their sensitivity to habitat quality and environmental change, together with their diverse ecological roles, makes Arctiinae moths valuable indicators of ecosystem health and biodiversity.
