Genus Telinga
Telinga is a genus of brush-footed butterflies within the subtribe Mycalesina (Tribe Satyrini, Subfamily Satyrinae, Family Nymphalidae, Superfamily Papilionoidea, Order Lepidoptera). Species of this genus are distributed primarily throughout South and Southeast Asia, where they inhabit tropical rainforests, secondary forests, woodland edges, bamboo groves, forest trails, plantations, and other shaded habitats with abundant grasses and bamboos.
Butterflies of the genus Telinga are generally small to medium-sized, possessing the sturdy body and rounded wings characteristic of satyrine butterflies. Like all members of the family Nymphalidae, their forelegs are reduced and brush-like, making them functionally four-legged. The upper surface of the wings is predominantly brown to dark brown, sometimes with subtle orange or ochre shading near the margins. The undersides are more intricately patterned with fine wavy lines, bands, and a series of eyespots (ocelli) on the forewings and hindwings. These cryptic markings closely resemble dead leaves and dried vegetation, providing effective camouflage when the butterflies rest with their wings closed.
Adults are diurnal, although they are most active during the early morning and late afternoon or under shaded forest conditions. Their flight is slow, low, and fluttering, usually close to the forest floor or through dense undergrowth. Adults commonly feed on fermenting fruits, tree sap, animal dung, decaying organic matter, and mineral-rich moisture, while visits to flowers for nectar are relatively infrequent. Males frequently engage in mud-puddling to obtain sodium and other dissolved minerals important for reproduction.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult stages. Females lay eggs singly on the leaves of host plants. Caterpillars are smooth-bodied, green or brown, and possess a characteristic bifid (forked) tail, a typical feature of many satyrine larvae. They feed primarily on grasses (Poaceae) and bamboos, while pupation occurs on leaves, stems, or among leaf litter, where the chrysalis is attached by a silken pad.
Species of Telinga are closely associated with humid forest habitats and are often encountered along shaded paths, stream margins, and bamboo thickets. Their subdued coloration and secretive habits make them less conspicuous than many brightly colored butterflies, despite being regular inhabitants of tropical forest understories.
Ecologically, Telinga butterflies contribute to forest ecosystems as herbivores during the larval stage and as nutrient recyclers during adulthood. Their caterpillars participate in grass and bamboo herbivory, while both larvae and adults provide food for birds, reptiles, amphibians, spiders, predatory insects, and parasitoids. Because they are closely associated with intact forest understories and respond to habitat disturbance, Telinga species are valuable indicators of forest health, habitat quality, and regional biodiversity.
