Subtribe Nyctemerina
Nyctemerina is a subtribe of tiger moths within the tribe Arctiini (Subfamily Arctiinae, Family Erebidae, Superfamily Noctuoidea, Order Lepidoptera). Members of this subtribe are distributed primarily throughout tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, Australia, and the Indo-Pacific islands. They are commonly associated with tropical rainforests, secondary forests, woodland edges, riverine habitats, plantations, parks, and gardens, where suitable larval host plants are abundant.
Moths of the subtribe Nyctemerina are generally small to medium-sized and are readily recognized by their slender body and boldly patterned wings. Most species display a striking combination of black or dark brown wings marked with conspicuous white or cream-colored spots, bands, or patches, creating a characteristic warning pattern. The abdomen is often brightly colored with yellow, orange, or red markings, which serve as aposematic (warning) coloration to deter predators. These contrasting colors make members of the subtribe among the most recognizable tiger moths.
Unlike many other moths, numerous Nyctemerina species are diurnal, flying actively during daylight hours, although some are also active at dusk. Adults are agile fliers and commonly visit flowers to feed on nectar using their well-developed coiled proboscis. They may also feed on other sugar-rich sources such as tree sap or fermenting fruits. Their conspicuous coloration and daytime activity are often associated with chemical defenses acquired during the larval stage.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on suitable host plants, usually in small clusters. Caterpillars are elongate and densely clothed with tufts of hairs or bristles that provide protection against predators. They feed primarily on herbaceous plants and shrubs, particularly members of the families Asteraceae, Boraginaceae, and Apocynaceae, although host plant preferences vary among species. Pupation takes place within a loose silken cocoon, often incorporating larval hairs for additional protection.
The subtribe includes the well-known genus Nyctemera, together with a small number of closely related genera. Species of Nyctemera are widespread throughout the Old World tropics and are noted for their distinctive black-and-white wing patterns, daytime activity, and ecological adaptability.
Ecologically, Nyctemerina moths contribute to ecosystem functioning as herbivores during the larval stage and as pollinators while feeding on nectar as adults. Their caterpillars participate in plant–herbivore interactions, while both larvae and adults serve as prey for birds, reptiles, spiders, predatory insects, and parasitoids. Their dependence on diverse native vegetation and their sensitivity to habitat disturbance make Nyctemerina moths valuable indicators of forest health, habitat quality, and regional biodiversity.
