Subtribe Callimorphina
Callimorphina is a subtribe of tiger moths within the tribe Arctiini (Subfamily Arctiinae, Family Erebidae, Superfamily Noctuoidea, Order Lepidoptera). Members of this subtribe are distributed throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, and parts of North America, with the greatest diversity occurring in temperate and tropical regions of Eurasia. They inhabit tropical rainforests, temperate forests, woodland edges, meadows, grasslands, shrublands, wetlands, mountainous regions, parks, and gardens, where suitable larval host plants are abundant.
Moths of the subtribe Callimorphina are generally medium-sized, with wingspans ranging from approximately 35–70 mm. They possess a moderately robust body and broad wings covered with dense scales. The forewings are commonly black, dark brown, or olive, marked with bold cream, yellow, or white bands and spots, while the hindwings are often brilliantly colored in shades of crimson, scarlet, orange, yellow, or pink with contrasting black markings. These striking color patterns function as aposematic (warning) coloration, advertising the presence of defensive chemicals that reduce predation.
Adults are primarily nocturnal or crepuscular, although several species are active during the day and frequently visit flowers in sunny habitats. They feed mainly on nectar using a well-developed coiled proboscis and may also obtain nutrients from tree sap or fermenting fruits. Their conspicuous coloration and relatively slow flight are characteristic of chemically protected tiger moths.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in clusters on suitable host plants. Caterpillars are densely clothed with long hairs, giving them the characteristic woolly bear appearance. They feed on a wide variety of herbaceous plants, shrubs, and occasionally trees, including species in the families Asteraceae, Plantaginaceae, Boraginaceae, Urticaceae, Fabaceae, and Rosaceae, depending on the species. Pupation occurs within a loose silken cocoon, often incorporating larval hairs for additional protection.
The subtribe includes several well-known genera, including Callimorpha, Euplagia, and related taxa. Representative species such as Callimorpha dominula (Scarlet Tiger) and Euplagia quadripunctaria (Jersey Tiger) are admired for their vivid coloration and are among the best-known tiger moths of Europe and western Asia.
Ecologically, Callimorphina moths contribute to terrestrial ecosystems as herbivores during the larval stage and as pollinators during adulthood. Their caterpillars participate in plant–herbivore interactions, while both larvae and adults serve as prey for birds, bats, reptiles, spiders, predatory insects, and parasitoids, although their chemical defenses and warning coloration reduce predation by many vertebrates. Because many species are associated with flower-rich habitats and intact woodland ecosystems, Callimorphina moths are valuable indicators of habitat quality, ecosystem health, and biodiversity.
