Bark Scorpion

Lychas scutilus

Lychas scutilus is a species of scorpion within the Buthidae family, known for including some of the most venomous scorpions in the world. Lychas scutilus is a relatively small scorpion, noted for its hardy nature and the capability to adapt to various environments. Like all scorpions, it has a segmented body with a tail that is tipped with a venomous stinger, and pincers (pedipalps) that it uses to grab prey.

Other Information

Venomous?

Lychas scutilus is venomous, utilizing its venom both to subdue prey and as a defense mechanism against predators. The venom of this species, like that of many in the Buthidae family, can be potent, but it is generally not considered lethal to humans unless allergic reactions occur.

A Danger to Humans?

While the venom of Lychas scutilus is potent, it is not typically classified among the most dangerous scorpions to humans. However, any scorpion sting, including those from Lychas scutilus, can cause significant pain and medical issues, particularly to those who are allergic to scorpion venom.

Population Status

There is limited specific data on the population size of Lychas scutilus. Like many scorpion species, they are adept at remaining hidden and can thrive in relatively harsh conditions, suggesting a stable population where they are not heavily impacted by human activity.

Life Span:
Scorpions generally have a relatively long lifespan compared to many other arthropods. Lychas scutilus can live for several years, often ranging from 4 to 6 years depending on environmental conditions.

Weight and Length:
Lychas scutilus, being a small species, usually measures less than 7 cm in length including its tail. Weight is minimal, typical of small scorpions.

Distribution:
Lychas scutilus is found in Southeast Asia, including regions such as Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and possibly surrounding areas. It tends to inhabit tropical and subtropical environments.

Habits and Lifestyle:
This scorpion is primarily nocturnal, active at night when it hunts and is less likely to encounter predators. During the day, it often hides under rocks, in crevices, or within leaf litter.

Diet and Nutrition:
The diet of Lychas scutilus consists mainly of small insects and other arthropods. They use their venom to paralyze or kill their prey before consuming it, which allows them to tackle prey items that are relatively large compared to their size.

Mating Habits:
Mating in scorpions, including Lychas scutilus, involves a complex courtship dance, often called a “promenade à deux.” The male grasps the female’s pincers and leads her over a deposited spermatophore, which she then takes into her genital opercula. Reproduction can result in a brood of several dozen young, which the female typically carries on her back until their first molt.
