Diet and Nutrition

Delias hyparete larvae eat the leaves of Dendrophthoe pentandra, they will eat the leaf laminae in groups around the oviposition location, resulting in a number of holes in the leaves.

Diet : Herbivore (larva), Nectarivore

Mating Habits

Delias hyparete reproduce by laying eggs (oviparous), the eggs are laid in groups at the bottom of the leaves of the host plant. Eggs are shaped like vases placed upright or tilted to one side. The eggs are pale yellow in color with slightly raised edges around the micropillar, and the eggs turn whitish as they ripen.

Life cycle (Metamorfosis) : Delias hyparete eggs take about 4-5 days to hatch, the newly hatched caterpillars are about 2.2mm long and have a black capsule head. The body is cylindrical, pale yellow in color covered with smooth dorsal, dorso-lateral and lateral setae rows. Each set of dorsal appears to contain small droplets at the distal end. The body color changes to yellowish green as the growth progresses, the growth in this first instar is quite fast and the body length reaches about 4 mm in about 2.5-3 days before moulting to the 2nd instar. The 2nd instar caterpillar is yellowish brown in color with rows of pale yellowish dorso-lateral and lateral tubercles, each of which is long, smooth and whitish. The dorsal black setae are still present but covered by the dorso-lateral and lateral setae. These instars last about 3-4 days with a body length of up to 7mm. The 3rd instar caterpillar is similar to the 2nd instar, this stage takes about 3-4 days to complete with a body length of about 14mm. The appearance of the 4th instar caterpillar is slightly changed from that of the 3rd instar caterpillar. These instars last about 3.5-4 days with a body length of about 22-24mm. The 5th and last instar caterpillar is very similar to the 4th instar caterpillar. The 5th instar lasts for 5-7 days, and the body length reaches 36-40mm. On the last day of its 5th instar, the body of the caterpillar shortens and changes its color to golden yellow. Adult caterpillars stop eating and stop at the underside of the leaves or stems / stalks of the host plant. Pupation occurs about 0.5-1 days later. Pupa Delias hyparete is yellow with black spots. This species has a short black rostrum on the anterior and horns on the dorsal and abdominal segments. A variable number of black stripes can be found on the wing pads. Pupa length: 24-25mm. After about 6-7 days of development, the cocoon shell turns translucent as the development in the case of the pupa ends. The next day adult butterflies emerge from the pupa case.
