The Angled Castor

Ariadne ariadne

Description

Ariadne ariadne has orange to reddish-brown forewings traversed by 5 or 6 narrow, winding black lines. There is a black disc line outside the ends cells of the two wings. The underside of the wings is pale dark brown, both wings have transverse dark brown patches and markings, the edges of the wings are serrated. The color of the female butterfly is paler than the male.

Larva : Ariadne ariadne larvae are cylindrical, yellowish brown covered with long black setae. The capsule of the head is pale brown in color, the body is marked with reddish brown patches. At the next instar, the body color becomes darker and you can see brownish cephalic horns on the head.

Pupa : Ariadne ariadne pupa has two form colors, namely brown and green, both of which have spots and patches on the dorsum area. At the anterior end there are two short cephalic horns, the length of the pupa is about 20-22 mm.

Diet and Nutrition

Ariadne ariadne larvae feed on leaves from their host plant, Ricinus communis from the Euphorbiaceae family.

Diet : Herbivore (larva), Nectarivore

Mating Habits

Ariadne ariadne reproduces by laying eggs (oviparous), the eggs are laid individually on the leaves of the host plant. Egg-shaped oval with a flat base, yellowish green color, the surface is covered with rows of long whitish hair.

Life cycle (Metamorfosis) : The eggs take about 2.5 to 3 days to hatch. Young caterpillars hatch by eating egg shells, their body color is pale yellowish brown. The caterpillar feeds on the leaf laminae and grows about 3.5mm in 2-2.5 days on the 1st instar. The body of the 2nd instar caterpillar is yellowish brown with dark brown lateral patches on most of the body segments. The head capsule is dark brown with two brownish cephalic horns. These instars last for 1.5 days with a body length of about 5.5mm. The 3rd instar caterpillar is very similar to the 2nd instar caterpillar, this instar takes about 2 days to complete with a body length of about 8-9 mm. The 4th instar is about 2.5-3 days long with a body length of about 17-18 mm. At the end of the 4th instar, small gray-white bands can be seen on the back. The 5th instar caterpillar has no difference from the previous instar, it’s just that the white spot on its back which is black or red is more striking so it’s easy to spot. The 5th instar lasts 3-3.5 days, and the body length reaches 30-31mm. On the last day, the body became short and the caterpillars stopped eating and roaming around. Finally it stops at the underside of a leaf or stem and rotates a silk pad that is hung vertically to perform a pre-pupation pose. The cocoons hang themselves from silk cushions without any backing silk ties. The dorsum of the thoracic segment is raised to the back in the mesothorax, at the anterior end are two short cephalic horns. Pupa length: 20-22mm. The pupal phase occurs for 5 days before the butterflies emerge from the cocoon.
