Description

Enicurus leschenaulti has black and white fur. The throat to the chest is black, and the face and spine are black. The crown and forehead have prominent white patches, sometimes looking like a small crest, which is the origin of the bird’s name. The lower body and rump of the bird are white. The tail is long and stratified, with a white tail tip and outer coat. The juvenile individual has a brownish black upper, chest, and throat, a brown pelvis, and brown spots on the abdomen, and also does not have a prominent white crown. The beak of this species is black, while the legs are pink.

Its natural habitat is subtropical or tropical humid lowland forest and subtropical or tropical humid mountain forest. The altitude range varies throughout its range, from 185 masl to 2,400 masl

Mating Habits

The breeding season for this species is between March and September, and possibly through October, with the breeding season varying slightly across regions. The nests are made of moss, plants, leaves and wood fibers in the shape of a large cup. Nests are usually placed in holes on the banks of rivers or cliffs, or between tree roots, or behind waterfalls, with humid conditions. It usually lays between two and five eggs, which are cream, pink, or greyish-white, and covered in red-brown, salmon, and purple spots. In Kalimantan it was recorded that eggs were found in March, and also on one occasion a mother with chicks was found in February
