Todiramphus chloris

Description

Todiramphus chloris upper coat color varies from blue to greenish while the underside is white. There is a white collar around the neck, giving the bird its name. Some breeds have a white stripe on the eye while others have a white spot between the eye and the beak. Large beak is black with pale yellow base color. Female individuals tend to be greener than males. Immature individuals are more dull in color than adults with black scaly marks on the neck and chest.

This species is mostly found in coastal areas, especially in mangrove swamps. It also inhabits farmland, open forests, meadows and parks. On some islands, it looks further inland, ranging from forests or mountains to an altitude of 1200 masl in Bali and Java

Mating Habits

The breeding season for Todiramphus chloris is between March to June and September to December, this species uses holes as nests, either natural tree holes or burrows that birds dig themselves into rotten trees, arboreal termite nests, or soil edges. They will also occupy old woodpecker holes. Usually 2 – 5 whitish round eggs are placed directly in the hole without using nesting material. Both parents participate in incubating the eggs and feeding the chicks. Chicks begin to leave the nest about 44 days after hatching.
