Description

This type of small bird, has the following characteristics: a thick, dark blue beak and blackish gray legs. The back, rump, and shoulders of adult males are reddish brown with blackish stripes forming a tiger-like pattern. The wings and tail are brown and the underparts are white, sometimes with faint edges on the sides, while the feathers of the female are duller and more brown than the feathers of the male. Juvenile birds have dark scale-like markings on the head, back and bottom and have no gray or black on the head.

Their main food is insects, especially grasshoppers, crickets, beetles, insects, butterflies, and moths, usually hunting from perches on the edge of the forest, also foraging among branches and leaves for prey.

Mating Habits

This species is monogamous, the breeding season lasts from May to July. The cup-shaped nests are built above the ground on branches in deciduous trees but are sometimes low among the bushes, usually 1.5 to 5 meters. Made of stems, twigs, roots and other vegetation and covered with grass. Three to six eggs, incubated by the female for 14-16 days. The young birds mature after about two weeks and remain close to the nest for another two weeks.
