Description

Phalacrocorax melanoleucos are medium in size with black and white plumage. In Indonesian territory, this cormorant is the only one that has white fur on the underside of its body. But its main features are the beak and the yellow skin of the face; because there are also individuals without or only a hint of white. Juvenile birds have black eye lines, crown, and side patches. Blue green iris, and black feet.

Habits and Lifestyle

This species is often seen alone or in small groups; generally busy looking for crustaceans in marshes, rivers and coasts. These birds usually roam and dive in shallow waters, not far from the shore. Dive intermittently, between 15–20 seconds, and then rest on the surface for about 5–10 seconds outside of time to swallow food.

Mating Habits

The breeding season occurs once a year, in the spring or early summer in the south, or after the transition season in the tropics. The nests are stilts made of perch, sometimes still leafy, arranged in tree branches; usually a type of eucalyptus that grows in inundated areas. Often these nests are close to nests of other waterbirds such as other cormorants, cangaks, ibis and spoon ibis. The eggs are pale blue, whitish due to the lime layer, ovate measuring about 46 x 31 mm, and numbering 4-5.
