Gallus varius

Description

Gallus varius is a large bird, the total length of the body (measured from the tip of the beak to the tip of the tail) is about 60 cm in roosters, and 42 cm in females. The comb on a rooster is not serrated, but rounded at the edges; red, with a bluish color in the middle. The hairs on the neck, nape and coat are shiny green with blackish edges, looking like fish scales. Hip cover in the form of long hair tapered golden yellow with a black center. The underside of the body is black, and the black tail is shiny greenish. The hen is smaller, brownish yellow, with stripes and black spots. Iris red, whitish gray beak color, and legs yellowish or slightly reddish.

Distribution

Gallus varius likes open, grassy areas, forest edges and areas with low hills near the coast. It is known that it is limited to Java and the islands of Nusa Tenggara, including Bali. In West Java it is recorded that living up to an altitude of 1,500 m above sea level, in East Java up to 3,000 m above sea level and in Lombok up to 2,400 m above sea level.

Habits and Lifestyle

Gallus varius commonly find food in open and grassy areas in the morning and afternoon, during the scorching day sheltering under the shade of the forest title, while at night, this group of species sleeps not far away in bamboo huts, shrubs, or forest palm leaves at an altitude of 1.5 – 4 m above ground.

Diet and Nutrition

Gallus varius generally eats various seeds, grass shoots and leaves, various insects, and various types of small animals such as spiders, worms, frogs and small lizards. Often seen in groups of 2 – 7 or more, looking for food in the grass near large groups of ungulates such as buffaloes, cows or bulls. Apart from hunting down insects that are disturbed by the large animals, this species is known to enjoy digging and scavenging for the herbivore droppings for undigested seeds, or insects that feed on the excrement.

Mating Habits

Gallus varius breed between October-November in West Java and around March-July in East Java. Nests are made simply on grass-covered soil, in cover of tall shrubs or grass. 3-4 eggs whitish.
