Description

The adult male Microhierax fringillarius has a glossy black upper body with a white forehead line encircling the black cheeks. Throat white or reddish, chest to abdomen reddish. Black thighs and hips, black beak and legs, black irises. During flight, males have white underwings with black borders on the primary and secondary flight feathers, and light streaks on the underwings. Females and juveniles are similar to adult males, but in females the tail is longer.
