Frog-legged Leaf Beetle (Sagra femorata)

Sagra femorata is a species of leaf beetle belonging to the genus Sagra (Subfamily Sagrinae, Family Chrysomelidae, Order Coleoptera). This striking beetle is distributed throughout parts of South and Southeast Asia, where it inhabits tropical forests, woodland edges, secondary vegetation, gardens, and agricultural landscapes. It is commonly associated with climbing plants and legumes that serve as its food source and breeding habitat.

Sagra femorata is a medium to large-sized leaf beetle renowned for its brilliant metallic coloration and distinctive body form. Adults often display iridescent shades of green, blue, purple, bronze, or copper, creating a striking metallic sheen. The body is elongated and robust, with smooth, glossy wing covers (elytra) that reflect light vividly.

One of the most notable features of this species is its strong sexual dimorphism. Males possess greatly enlarged hind femora and elongated hind legs, giving them a distinctive appearance. These enlarged legs are believed to play a role in territorial behavior, courtship, and competition with other males. Females are generally smaller and lack the exaggerated hind-leg development seen in males.

Adults are herbivorous and feed primarily on the leaves and tender shoots of host plants, particularly members of the legume family (Fabaceae). Larvae also develop in association with these plants, feeding on plant tissues during their growth.

The life cycle follows complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on suitable host plants, and the developing larvae pass through several growth stages before pupating and emerging as adults.

Ecologically, Sagra femorata contributes to plant–insect interactions as a herbivore and serves as prey for birds, reptiles, spiders, and predatory insects. Its presence reflects the diversity of tropical ecosystems and the specialized relationships between insects and their host plants. Because of its metallic beauty and remarkable hind-leg morphology, Sagra femorata is considered one of the most visually impressive leaf beetles in Asia.
