Tiger and Crow Butterflies (Tribe Danaini)
Danaini is a tribe of brush-footed butterflies within the subfamily Danainae (Family Nymphalidae, Superfamily Papilionoidea, Order Lepidoptera). Commonly known as the milkweed butterflies, tigers, and crows, the tribe comprises more than 200 described species distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas, with several species extending into temperate regions. Members inhabit tropical rainforests, secondary forests, woodland edges, mangroves, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural landscapes, parks, and gardens, where suitable larval host plants are abundant.
Butterflies of the tribe Danaini are generally medium to large-sized, with wingspans ranging from approximately 50–120 mm. Like all members of the family Nymphalidae, they possess reduced, brush-like forelegs that are not used for walking. Their bodies are robust, and the broad wings display striking combinations of orange, black, white, blue, brown, and cream, often marked with bold veins, spots, or bands. These conspicuous patterns serve as aposematic (warning) coloration, advertising the butterflies’ chemical defenses to predators. Many species are involved in Müllerian mimicry, while unrelated butterflies frequently imitate their appearance through Batesian mimicry.
Adults are diurnal and are characterized by a slow, graceful, gliding flight that makes them easily recognizable. They feed primarily on floral nectar using a long, coiled proboscis and also visit damp soil, tree sap, fermenting fruits, and decaying organic matter for additional nutrients. Males of many species actively collect pyrrolizidine alkaloids from certain flowering plants. These compounds are used to synthesize courtship pheromones and enhance chemical defenses against predators. Several members of the tribe are known for long-distance seasonal migrations or local mass movements.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis), and adult stages. Females lay eggs singly on the leaves or young shoots of host plants. Caterpillars are smooth-bodied and brightly colored, commonly displaying bands of black, white, yellow, orange, or red that signal their toxicity. Most larvae feed on plants in the family Apocynaceae, particularly milkweeds and their relatives, although some species utilize other chemically defended plant families. Larvae sequester toxic cardiac glycosides and other secondary compounds from their host plants, retaining these defenses through adulthood. Pupation occurs on vegetation, where the chrysalis hangs suspended by its cremaster and is often ornamented with metallic gold or silver spots.
The tribe includes numerous well-known genera such as Danaus, Euploea, Tirumala, Parantica, Ideopsis, Amauris, and Anetia. Representative species include the Monarch Butterfly (Danaus plexippus), Common Tiger (Danaus genutia), Blue Tiger (Tirumala limniace), and Common Crow (Euploea core), all of which are among the most familiar butterflies in their respective regions.
Ecologically, Danaini butterflies are important pollinators that contribute to the reproduction of many flowering plants. Their caterpillars influence host-plant populations through herbivory, while both larvae and adults support specialized predators and parasitoids capable of tolerating their chemical defenses. Because many species rely on specific host plants and are sensitive to habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change, Danaini butterflies are widely regarded as valuable indicators of ecosystem health, habitat quality, and biodiversity.
