Geometridae, commonly known as inchworms or loopers, is a large family of moths distinguished by their larvae, which are known for their unique “looping” movement. This movement is due to the absence of the middle pairs of prolegs, causing them to move by bringing their hind prolegs up to their thoracic legs, creating a characteristic looping form as they advance. Geometridae includes a diverse range of species, with approximately 23,000 species distributed globally, inhabiting varied ecosystems from tropical rainforests to temperate forests. Adult geometrid moths are typically slender and have wings that are often held flat when at rest. Many species exhibit cryptic coloration with intricate patterns on their wings, mimicking their natural environments to evade predators. The larvae, which are major defoliators, feed on a wide variety of plants, making some species significant pests in agriculture and forestry. The family’s vast diversity and the ecological role of its members make Geometridae a key subject of study in both ecological and agricultural research contexts.
