Tawny Nurse Shark

Nebrius ferrugineus

Small mouth with nose barbels. Two dorsal fins of almost equal height.

Size : 320 cm

Habitat : Lagoon and external reefs, 1-70 m. Usually lies below overhangs or in cavities during the day. At night it feeds on octopus, crabs, bottom-dwelling fish, sea snakes and sea-urchins. Quarry is sucked in whole and crushed in the mouth. Generally harmless, but on provocation can bite firmly.

Distribution : Red Sea and East Africa to S Japan, Micronesia and French Polynesia.
