Sabre Squirrelfish

Sargocentron spiniferum

Gill lid with very long spike.

Size : 45 cm

Habitat : Inhabits lagoons and outreefs, 1-120 m. Frequently floats immobile below overhangs, in front of cavities, also below table corals during the day. At night it hunts for crabs, srimps and small fish. Largest species of the family. Not shy.

Distribution : Red Sea, East Africa to S Japan, Micronesia, Hawaii and French Polynesia.
