White-spotted Puffer

Arothron hispidus

White patches, white rings around the eyes. A large dark spot with white to yellow markings and fine white border around the pectoral fin base.
At first, juveniles have very few white dots. A characteristic is the large, dark, brightly-bordered spot around the pectoral fin base.

Size : 50 cm

Habitat : Inhabits lagoons, bays and outreefs with mixed coral, sand and rubble ground; also on seagrass fields, 1-50 m. Common species, often found dormant on the seabed. Feeds on sponges, sea squirts, crabs, coral, starfishes, mussels and algae.

Distribution : Red Sea to S Japan, Hawaii, Panama and French Polynesia.
