Swarthy Parrotfish

Scarus niger

Terminal-Phase: Dark greenish-blue with red eye and yellow-green spot behind the eye.
Initial-Phase: Red head and wavy light and dark side strip. The specimens shown is already undergoing the colour change to male (IP).

Size : 40 cm

Habitat : Lives in coral-rich outreefs, lagoons and bays, 1-20 m. A common species in some places. Females often in small harem groups. Male territorial behaviour is occasionally observed.

Distribution : Recd Sea and East Africa to SW Japan, GBR and French Polynesia.
