Ribbon Eel

Rhinomuraena quaesita

Extremely elongated and compressed laterally, extremely large, pointed, funnel-shaped snout in front.

Size : 120 cm

Habitat : Inhabits sand and rubble areas in lagoons and outreefs, 1-57 m. While growing, this exceptionally colourful moray eel passes through two colour changes and one sex change. Juveniles are black with a yellow dorsal fin. Males are luminous blue with a yellow dorsal fin and yellow snout. Females are at first yellowish and finally bright yellow. It is true to its location, has a burrow usually in sand or rubble in the immediate vicinity of rock or coral. Often looks out with head or forward body exposed. Forms very tight body loops while meandering above the seabed. Feeds on small fish.

Distribution : East Africa to SW Japan, Marshall Islands, Australia and Tuamotus in French Polynesia.
