Indian Lionfish

Pterois miles

Red to almost black bands and pairs of white stripes.

Size : 38 cm

Habitat : Inhabits lagoons, bays and outer reefs, 1-60 m. Often in overhangs, cavities and in wrecks. Hunts fish, crabs and shrimps at sunset and at night. Will not be scared away, can even sting divers at such attempts.

Distribution : Red Sea and East Africa to Andaman Sea, Sumatra, Lombok and Sumbawa. Further to the east, it is replaced by P. volitans. Migrated through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean, and now the Caribbean as an alien invader.
