Golden Trevally

Gnathanodon speciosus

Sub-adult silvery with dark vertical stripes. Adults silvery with a few black patches. Juveniles are metallic-yellow with black vertical stripes. For their own protection against predators in open water, sub-adult sometimes also accompany large fish, such as sharks and groupers, also turtle and dugongs. Very small juveniles also often make use of jellyfish.

Size : 120 cm

Habitat : In deep lagoons and out reefs, 1-50 m. They feed on invertebrates such as crustaceans, which they grub from sandy grounds, they also feed on fish.

Distribution : Red Sea and East Africa to SW Japan and Panama.
