Robust Ghostpipefish

Solenostomus cyanopterus

Colouration variable, often brown or green, but also pale cream-coloured, rarely red. The size especially of tail and pectoral fins is likewise variable.

Size : 16 cm

Habitat : In lagoons and protected coastal reefs, 1-20 m. Usually above sandy bottom and between algae and seagrass. Often in pairs, swims around slowly. Can sway back and forth like torn-off seagrass leaves in a heavy sea.

Distribution : Red Sea and East Africa (to Mauritius) to S Japan, Australia and Fiji.
