Painted Frogfish

Antennarius pictus

Fishing rod twice as long as second spine ray. The colour is very variable in this species, can adapt to a new environment within days.
Small juveniles frequently show very striking black coloration with orange spots and blue fin edges. Brilliant red, black, yellow, orange and olive-brown specimens are also known. The typical round blotches can usually be observed.

Size : 16 cm

Habitat : In protected coastal reefs and lagoons, 3-70 m. Also on sand or rubble near the reef, then usually near sponges or other protective objects.

Distribution : Red Sea and East Africa to SW Japan, Hawaii, Australia.
