Bluestriped Fangblenny

Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos

Light to very dark brown with two blue stripes.
A variant is continuously orange with two blue stripes.

Size : 12 cm

Habitat : Prefers clear, coral-rich lagoons and outreefs, 1-40 m. In rapid attacks, it bites off small skin flakes, scales or fin part from other fish from which it feeds. Juveniles imitate the cleanerfish Labroides dimidiatus. When disturbed, flees into small rock hole or empty worm burrows. The eggs are also laid in such burrows and the male stands guard nearby.

Distribution : Red Sea and East Africa to S Japan, Line Island, SE Australia and French Polynesia.
