Calotes versicolor

Description

Calotes versicolor is medium in size with a relatively large head, in males there is a small gular sac on throat. Its tail is like a whip and is more than twice the length of its body. This species can be recognized by the presence of a crest on its neck, a pair of small spines above the tympanum and an absence of shoulder folds. The scales on his body are facing backwards and upwards, the scales on the underside of his thighs are keen. The body color is generally light brown and can adjust to the surrounding environtment (mimicry). The back has a wide brown stripe with yellowish lateral band on the side. Breeding males have a red color on the heads and necks with black patches on the shoulders. Females and juveniles have darker transverse stripes with patches on the sides, often with lighter paired dorso-lateral stripes.

Distribution

Calotes versicolor lives in dry, open scrubs, low vegetation and near farmlands, usually taking shelter in tree trunks to avoid threats. Found in urban areas and recorded to live up to 920 m above sea level.

Calotes versicolor is often seen basking on shrubs or foraging on the ground. This species is active during the day and usually sleeps on vegetation at night. Their body color can adjust to the surrounding environtment and capable of rotating each eye independently.

Calotes versicolor is an omnivorous animal, its diet consists of arthropods, crickets, grasshoppers, ants, small vertebrates to rodents and other lizards. Sometimes consuming plant parts such as leaves.

Mating Habits

During the mating season, the head and neck of the male individual change color to red with black patches on the shoulders. The male individual attracts the opposite sex by inflating his throat, nodding his head and doing press-ups, may bite the female during mating but cause no injury. This species reproduces by laying eggs or oviparous and able to breed at about 1 year old.. The female lays 6-20 eggs which are placed in a hole in the ground.
