Javan Porcupine

Hystrix javanica

Description

The Javan porcupine is a group of rodents endemic to Indonesia. The distinctive features of the species are blackish brown in color and the body is covered with fine hairs (like hair in other mammals), touch hairs, and spines. Fine hair and thorns are found all over the hedgehog’s body, except for the nose, mouth, ears, and soles of the feet. The spines are attached to the muscles that function as pulling the spines up (tensioning) when there is an approaching threat.
