Attacus atlas

Description

Attacus atlas is reddish to orangish. The females are bigger than the males. The wings are rounded with the forewing has a protrusion from the anterior distal edge. The base of the wing is dark orange, soft brown or reddish brown with white, black, brown, and pinkish pattern and also have triangular hyaline spot in the middle of each wing. The underside of the wing has same pattern but paler in color. It has two comb-like antennas.

Attacus atlas could be found in tropical rain forest at about 1500-200 m above sea level.

Attacus atlas spend most of their time on the tree, and actively fly at dusk. The male actively fly to find the female.

The larvae eats the leaves of host tree while the adults do not feed, they store the fat from the larval stage.

Mating Habits

Female Attacus atlas produces pheromone which could be detected by the feathery antenna of the male. The mating occur at dusk and lasts for24 hours. The male can be mating more than once while the female only mate to a male (monandrous). Attacus atlas is oviparous. The female laying 134-169 eggs and placed on the underside of the host tree leaves.
