Loxura atymnus

Description

Loxura atymnus has reddish orange wings with black apical border on the forewings. The undersides of the wings are yellowish with a slightly blurred post-discal fascia. The antenna is short, the rear wing tail is rather long with white tips. The female individual has a tornal section (rear wing tip) that is dark dust.

Larvae: Loxura atymnus larvae measuring 1.2 – 1.3 mm, have a black head, body pale yellowish color with long hair (setae) on the back and sub-spiral. His body color gradually changed to a dark yellow color with a tinge of orange to red.

Pupa: Loxura atymnus pupae are green with large markings on the back in the form of brown and white patterns, relatively long abdomen. Whitish wing pads and protruding between the base color of the pupa, the length of the pupa is about 13-14 mm.

Loxura atymnus larvae feed on the young leaves of the Smilax bracteata plant, but it is also found in several types of Dioscorea (Yam) and Smilax.

Mating Habits

Loxura atymnus reproduces by laying eggs (ovipar), female butterflies lay their eggs one by one, not in groups on the young shoots of the host plant. The eggs are circular with a depressed micropillar area, 0.9 mm diameter, white color, the surface is covered with small holes. When the larvae hatch, they eat the egg shells to get out, they finish the shells before consuming the first leaves.
