Diet and Nutrition

Hyarotis adrastus larvae feed on the leaves of its host plant, Daemonorops augustifolia.

Diet : Herbivore (larva), Nectarivore

Mating Habits

Hyarotis adrastus reproduce by laying eggs (oviparous), the eggs are laid individually on the upper surface of the leaves of the host plant. The eggs are shallow dome-shaped golden yellow, but on the 2nd day a reddish spot appears. Egg diameter is about 1.3 mm.

Life cycle (Metamorfosis) : Hyarotis adrastus eggs hatch in 4 or 5 days, the caterpillars are pale yellowish in color, the head is black, cylindrical with long white setae at the posterior end. After eating the first leaves the caterpillar turns dark green and reaches 6.5 mm in 5-6 days. In the 2nd instar the body color remains the same, the head is dark brown and the setae are short on the posterior. These instars last for 5-6 days with a body length of up to 9-10 mm. The next instar does not show much change, their body length is about 15-20 mm in 5-6 days. The 4th instar of the caterpillar’s head capsule is dark brown with wide, pale brown markings. This stage is also called penultimate, lasts 6-7 days with a body length of 26-28 mm. At the last instar, the body of the caterpillar becomes whitish with a green tinge, the head capsule is pale cream brown with dark brown stripes on both sides of the coronal sulcus. The 5th instar lasts 9-10 days and the body length reaches 38-40 mm. When entering the prepupa phase, the caterpillar colour turn into creamy brown with a pink or purple tinge, the caterpillar wraps itself in silk ribbons. After 7.5-8 days the pupa becomes black and the butterfly will come out of the pupa.
