Athyma asura

Description

Athyma asura has black forewings with white markings, forewing cells have a short basal line with wide spots on the outside, there are post-discal white spots in space 3.On the hind wings there are a series of post-discal white spots with 2-3 spots have dark spot on the inside. The underside of the wings are orange brown with the same marking as the upper, the edges of the wings are serrated.

Larva: larvae of Athyma asura dark brown with a pair of dorso-lateral spines branching the 1st and 5th abdominal segments of the prothorax are whitish to yellowish. There are also long, branched and protruding dorso-lateral spines in the 2nd and 3rd thoracic segments, 2nd and 5th abdominal segments. The capsule of the head is dark brown to black with a brown turbekel. At the last instar nearing the prepupa period, the body changes color to light green with a light blue turbecles.

Pupa: The pupa of Athyma asura is pale brown with dark brown stripes, the belly segment is slender, the thorax is larger and extends sideways. The pupa has a pair of large, curved cephalic horns.

Mating Habits

Athyma asura reproduces by laying eggs (oviparous), the eggs are laid individually on the tips of the leaves of the host plant. The eggs are greenish in color, slightly rounded in shape with a surface marked with hexagonal holes and bearing short spines in the corner of the hole, giving them the appearance of small sea urchins.
