Description

Catopsilia pyranthe has a greenish white forewings, black apical borders and black spots at the cell-end. The underside of the wings is darker greenish with a reddish-brown transverse so that it looks mottled.

Larva: Catopsilia pyranthe larvae are cylindrical, green with white and black stripes, rough body, covered with glossy black turbecles.

Pupa: Catopsilia pyranthe pupa is pale green with yellow lateral stripes.

Catopsilia pyranthe larvae eat young leaves of Senna alata, but it can also be found in Cassia and Crotalaria species.

Mating Habits

Catopsilia pyranthe reproduces by laying eggs (ovipar), female butterflies lay their eggs one by one or in small groups of 3-4 eggs on the surface or under the young leaves of the host plant. The eggs are skittle-shaped, greenish white. When the larvae hatch, they eat the egg shells to get out, after which they are consumed before consuming the first leaves.
