Arhopala abseus

Description

Arhopala abseus males have dark blue-violet upperwings with dark forewing edges extending towards the crest, females are glowing blue with wider margins. The underside of the wing is reddish brown with blackish brown or silver markings. On the hind wings there is a short white-tipped tail at the tips of vein 1b and 3, and a slightly long white-tipped tail on vein 2.

Larva: Arhopala abseus larvae are yellowish green with dorsal and dorso-lateral bands, have two small white patches embedded posteriorly and one spot on the anterior edge.

Pupa: Arhopala abseus pupa has a distinctive lycaenid shape, creamy white with small reddish brown slits, smooth surface.

Arhopala abseus larvae feed on the young leaves of Hopea pachycarpa and H.odorata.

Mating Habits

Arhopala abseus reproduces by laying eggs (oviparous), the eggs are laid individually or in small groups on the underside of the leaves of the host plant. The eggs are white with a yellowish green tinge, are shaped like a bun and have a smooth reticulate surface.

Life cycle (Metamorfosis) : Arhopala abseus caterpillar passes through 5 instars before pupating, its body is yellowish green to the end, except for the last two or three days of the last instars the color of its body becomes whitish. In the third to final instar, the caterpillar has a prothoracic shield and a black anal plate. The pupa phase occurs in the shade of the leaves, the pupa is milky white, the body is protected by a silk belt. After 8-9 days, the butterflies emerge from the pupa.
