Description

Male Papilio memnon has black upper wings with bluish dusty stripes. Black lower wings with bluish stripes, red on wing bases, red patches on the tornal. The color pattern of this species is very various, recorded 4 forms of color patterns in males and 26 forms in females, this is due to polymorphism for mimicry.

Larva: Papilio memnon larvae at first instar stage have a brown body, yellowish brown head, white body part above the head and tip of abdomen, light brown spines. At the final stage of instar the larva is green with white on the underside.

Papilio memnon is common in forests, gardens and lowland areas, but can fly up to 2,100 m above sea level in the Himalayas.

Papilio memnon larvae feed on young leaves of pomelo (Citrus grandis) and lime (Citrus aurantifolia) which are the host plants. Adult butterflies often perch and forage on the Poinsettia, Jasminum, Lantana, Canna and Salvia.
