Phoebis sennae

Description

The male phoebis sennae has an unmarked lemon yellow upperwing, the female is yellow or white with black edges and black spots in the cell area. The undersides of the wings are pale yellow with pink edges, there are 2 silver spots in both sexes.

Larva: Phoebis sennae larvae are yellow to greenish in color, their sides are striped with black dots on their back. The length of the caterpillars can reach 41 – 45 mm.

Pupa: Phoebis sennae pupae are yellow or green in color with pink and green stripes. The shape of the pupa is pointed at both ends and is bent in the middle.

Phoebis sennae larvae feed on the leaves of its host plant, Senna hebecarpa, Cassia species and member of the Fabaceae. Adult butterflies suck nectar from various types of flowers with long tubes, such as cordia, bougainvilla, cardinal flowers, hibiscus, lantana and wild morning glories.

Mating Habits

Phoebis sennae reproduces by laying eggs (oviparous), the eggs are laid one by one on the young leaves or flower buds of the host plant.
