Doleschallia bisaltide

Description

Doleschallia bisaltide has orange forewings with black margins at the tips of the wings. The undersides of the wings are purplish brown with vein-like markings running down both the fore and hind wings. The lower wings have two large ocelluses crowned with orange and a black center.

Larva: The larvae of Doleschallia bisaltide are black with two rows of white spots on the back, the body is covered with black branched spines and the head has a pair of hairy horns.

Pupa: Doleschallia bisaltide pupae are brown with yellow spots and curved black lines on each side, smooth surface.

Distribution

Doleschallia bisaltide can be found in primary and secondary rainforests with an altitude between 0 – 1400 m asl. Besides that, it can also be found in mangrove forests, parks and cities.

Doleschallia bisaltide flies at moderate speed, usually found flying alone along forest trails, if disturbed will fly quickly. Male butterflies absorb moisture from the moist sand and rocks on the riverbanks.

Doleschallia bisaltide larvae feed in groups on their host plants Asystasia gangetica and Pseuderanthemum sp. They are also found in Artocarpus, Calycanthus and Graptophyllum.

Doleschallia bisaltide reproduces by laying eggs (oviparous), the eggs are laid in small groups in the young shoots of the host plant, the eggs are round and pale yellow.
