Yellow Bittern

Ixobrychus sinensis

Description

Ixobrychus sinensis has a short neck and long beak. Male individuals are dull yellow on the upper body and yellowish on the underside. The head and neck are chestnut colored, with a black crown, while the female individual has a brown crown, neck and chest. The juvenile individuals of this species are like females, but underneath there is a thick brown, mottled streak on the top.

This species is an active hunter, walking among the reeds, when under threat, it remains silent with its beak erect and its eyes staring forward strangely, watching the source of its threat. Some of these species are resident, but some also undertake short migrations in northern regions.
