Description

Asarcornis scutulata varies in color from dark brown to completely black. Adult birds are dark in color in contrast to the whitish head and neck. Beak and legs dull yellowish, head and neck above black spots. When flying the wing covers are white, contrasting with the rest of the wing. Females are smaller and usually have a denser head and upper neck. Juveniles are more dull and brown.
