Pycnonotus zeylanicus

Description

Pycnonotus zeylanicus is a medium-sized bird, a total body length of about 28 cm. Characteristics include a pale orange- or yellow-straw crown (top of the head) and earflaps; the malar stripe on the side of the chin and the bridle that crosses the eye is black. The back is olive brown with white streaking, the wings and tail are greenish or olive-brown green. The chin and throat are whitish, the neck and chest are white with white stripes, the stomach is gray, and the rump is yellow. Black beak, dark brown feet and reddish irises.

Distribution

This bird spreads in the lowlands and hills of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra (including Nias), Kalimantan, and western Java. In West Java there is an altitude of 800 m above sea level, but is now considered extinct due to hunting. Found in marshes and swamps around rivers, or on forest edges.

Population threats​

In Java, this bird’s population has decreased, due to busy hunting since the 1980s. Its melodious chirp makes this bird very popular as a pet.
