Description

Actitis hypoleucos is a migratory bird, has a slightly small body with a short dark gray beak. Upper feathers brown, blackish flying feathers. The underside is white with a gray brown hue on the sides of the chest. There is a black streak past the eye. The slices are brown and the legs are pale olive green. Flying with a distinctive pattern, hovering with stiff wings.

Distribution

Actitis hypoleucos breed in Africa and Eurasia but migrate southward in autumn to Australia. On Java and Bali it is a very common species of migratory bird and can be seen most of the year. Often visit various habitats ranging from coastal mud flats to rice fields in the highlands up to 1500 meters above sea level along streams and river banks.

Actitis hypoleucos is common in large groups. This bird is common in most of Europe and Asia, temperate and subtropical, and migrate to Africa, South Asia, and Australia in winter. The eastern edge of its migration route passes through Palau in Micronesia, where hundreds of birds may flock to stopovers. Walk in a non-stop bobbing gait and fly also in a distinctive pattern with rigid winged glides

Actitis hypoleucos usually forages on the ground or in shallow water, takes small food such as insects, crustaceans, and invertebrates, maybe even catching insects in flight.
