Pycnonotus atriceps

Description

Pycnonotus atriceps is a member of the Pycnonotidae family. Medium size is 17 cm. The dominant coat is yellowish in color with a shiny black head and black throat. The upper body is olive-yellowish, the wings and tail are blackish in color, but the tail has a striking yellowish color on the edges. Lower body is yellow-greenish. The iris is pale-blue, the beak is black, and the legs are brown.

These birds are found on forest edges, open and secluded secondary rainforest, and in coastal scrub. Can be found at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. However, in Sumatra, it can be found up to an altitude of 1200 masl

When foraging this species is often seen alongside other species which also belong to the same family. Its diet is small fruits such as berries and figs, as well as ants and other insects.

Mating Habits

This species breeds in October, January and March-May. The female lays 2-3 pink eggs, and has purple spots. The nest is in the shape of an untidy cup, made of ferns, grass fibers, leaves, and other materials, glued to a cobweb, on a branching branch not far from the ground.
