Genus Xystrocera
Xystrocera is a genus of longhorn beetles within the tribe Xystrocerini (Subfamily Cerambycinae, Family Cerambycidae, Order Coleoptera). Species of this genus are widely distributed throughout South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Asia, and parts of Oceania. They occur in tropical and subtropical forests, plantations, orchards, agricultural landscapes, and urban parks, where they are closely associated with woody plants and trees.
Beetles of the genus Xystrocera are generally medium to large in size and possess the elongated body and long, segmented antennae typical of longhorn beetles. In males, the antennae often equal or exceed the body length, whereas those of females are usually somewhat shorter. The body is commonly dark brown, reddish-brown, grayish, or black, frequently marked with pale bands, mottled patches, or fine pubescence that provides effective camouflage against tree bark.
Adults are active mainly during warm months and are often found resting on tree trunks, branches, freshly cut timber, or attracted to lights at night. They possess strong chewing mouthparts and may feed on bark, sap, flowers, or other plant exudates, although feeding is generally limited compared with the larval stage.
The life cycle follows complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs in cracks, wounds, or beneath the bark of host trees. After hatching, the creamy-white, legless larvae bore into the wood, where they feed on the inner bark and sapwood, creating extensive galleries. Depending on the species and environmental conditions, larval development may require several months to more than a year. Pupation occurs within the wood, and adults emerge through characteristic round exit holes.
The genus includes several economically important species, including Xystrocera globosa, which attacks a variety of hardwood trees, particularly members of the family Fabaceae, such as Albizia, Acacia, Leucaena, and related genera. Some species are regarded as forestry or plantation pests because larval tunneling weakens timber, reduces wood quality, and may eventually kill young trees.
Ecologically, Xystrocera beetles contribute to the decomposition of weakened or dead wood and participate in nutrient recycling within forest ecosystems. They also provide food for birds, reptiles, mammals, spiders, and parasitoid insects. While certain species can be economically significant pests, the genus remains an important component of forest biodiversity and plays a role in maintaining ecological processes associated with woody vegetation.
