Tinolius hypsana

Tinolius hypsana is a species of moth belonging to the genus Tinolius (Subfamily Tinoliinae, Family Erebidae, Superfamily Noctuoidea, Order Lepidoptera). The species is distributed in tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia, where it inhabits tropical rainforests, secondary forests, woodland edges, plantations, parks, and other habitats with dense vegetation. Adults are most frequently encountered at night and are readily attracted to artificial lights.

Tinolius hypsana is a small to medium-sized moth with a slender to moderately robust body and broad, delicately scaled wings. Its overall coloration is predominantly cryptic, consisting of shades of brown, gray, reddish-brown, and cream. The forewings are typically marked with fine transverse lines, wavy bands, and darker patches that closely resemble the texture of bark, dried leaves, or lichens, providing excellent camouflage during daytime rest. The hindwings are generally paler than the forewings and are similarly patterned, allowing the moth to blend effectively with its surroundings.

Adults are primarily nocturnal, becoming active shortly after dusk. They rest motionless on tree trunks, branches, or foliage during the day and rely on their cryptic wing patterns to avoid detection by predators. Like many erebid moths, adults possess a well-developed coiled proboscis and are believed to feed on nectar, tree sap, fermenting fruits, or other sugar-rich plant exudates.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on suitable host plants. Although the immature stages of T. hypsana have not been thoroughly documented, the caterpillars are believed to be leaf-feeding herbivores that develop on broad-leaved forest plants, similar to other members of the genus. Pupation occurs within a loose silken cocoon attached to vegetation or concealed among leaf litter.

Tinolius hypsana is a secretive species that is most often recorded during nocturnal light-trapping surveys rather than by daytime observations. Its cryptic coloration and preference for forested habitats make it inconspicuous despite its occurrence across parts of tropical Asia.

Ecologically, Tinolius hypsana contributes to forest ecosystems as a herbivore during its larval stage and as a participant in nocturnal food webs as an adult. Caterpillars play a role in plant–herbivore interactions, while both larvae and adults serve as prey for bats, birds, spiders, predatory insects, and parasitoids. Its presence in well-vegetated forest habitats reflects the ecological diversity of tropical moth communities and contributes to regional biodiversity.
