Mud-dauber Wasps (Tribe Sceliphrini)
Tribe Sceliphrini is a group of solitary wasps within the subfamily Sceliphrinae and family Sphecidae, commonly known as mud-dauber wasps. Members of this tribe are found in many regions, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas, where they inhabit gardens, forests, open landscapes, and human settlements. They are generally slender wasps with a narrow waist, strong wings, and adaptations for capturing and transporting prey. Females construct nests from mud, often forming clusters of cells or tube-like structures on walls, rocks, branches, and other sheltered surfaces. Each cell is provisioned with paralyzed spiders that serve as food for the developing larva. Adults commonly feed on flower nectar, while their predatory nesting behavior helps regulate spider populations. Through their nesting activities and interactions with flowering plants, Sceliphrini contribute to local ecological communities.
