Red and Bordered Plant Bugs (Superfamily Pyrrhocoroidea)

Pyrrhocoroidea is a superfamily of true bugs within the infraorder Pentatomomorpha (Order Hemiptera). The superfamily comprises two extant families, Pyrrhocoridae (red bugs or cotton stainers) and Largidae (bordered plant bugs), together containing more than 700 described species distributed worldwide, with the greatest diversity occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. Members inhabit tropical rainforests, temperate forests, grasslands, savannas, shrublands, wetlands, coastal habitats, agricultural fields, plantations, parks, and gardens, where they are closely associated with herbaceous plants, shrubs, and trees.

True bugs of the superfamily Pyrrhocoroidea are generally small to medium-sized, measuring approximately 6–25 mm in body length. They possess an oval to elongate body with well-developed wings folded flat over the abdomen. The head is relatively small, bearing a long, segmented piercing–sucking rostrum used for feeding. Coloration ranges from dull brown and black to striking combinations of bright red, orange, yellow, and black. Many species exhibit bold warning patterns or mimic toxic insects, while others are cryptically colored to blend with bark, leaves, or soil. Unlike many other pentatomomorphan bugs, members of Pyrrhocoroidea lack ocelli (simple eyes), a characteristic feature of the superfamily.

Adults are primarily diurnal and are often found walking on vegetation, tree trunks, flowers, or the ground. Many species occur in small groups or large aggregations, particularly during feeding, mating, or overwintering. They are active walkers and capable fliers, although some species rely more on walking than flight. When disturbed, they may release defensive secretions from scent glands that discourage predators.

Members of Pyrrhocoroidea are predominantly phytophagous (plant-feeding), using their piercing–sucking mouthparts to extract sap from seeds, fruits, stems, flowers, and developing plant tissues. Many species show a preference for plants in the families Malvaceae, Sterculiaceae, and Tiliaceae, although numerous other host plants are utilized. Some species also feed opportunistically on dead insects or other organic material, particularly when plant resources are limited.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females deposit eggs in clusters on vegetation, beneath leaf litter, or in soil near host plants. Wingless nymphs resemble adults but differ in coloration and lack fully developed wings. They undergo several molts before reaching maturity, occupying similar habitats and feeding on the same host plants throughout development.

The superfamily contains two families: Pyrrhocoridae, which includes well-known genera such as Dysdercus, Pyrrhocoris, and Antilochus, and Largidae, represented by genera such as Largus and Physopelta. Some pyrrhocorid species, particularly cotton stainers (Dysdercus spp.), are economically important agricultural pests because they damage cotton bolls and stain cotton fibers.

Ecologically, Pyrrhocoroidea bugs play important roles in terrestrial ecosystems as seed feeders and herbivores, influencing plant reproduction and nutrient cycling. They also serve as prey for birds, reptiles, amphibians, spiders, predatory insects, and parasitoids. Because many species are closely associated with particular host plants and respond to environmental changes, members of Pyrrhocoroidea are valuable indicators of habitat quality, ecosystem health, and biodiversity.
