Common Earwigs (Family Forficulidae)
Forficulidae is the largest and most well-known family of earwigs within the superfamily Forficuloidea (Order Dermaptera). Members of this family are distributed worldwide and occur in a wide variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, agricultural fields, gardens, wetlands, and urban environments. They are most commonly found in moist, sheltered places such as under stones, beneath bark, within leaf litter, and in soil crevices.
Earwigs of the family Forficulidae are generally small to medium-sized insects with an elongated, flattened body and a pair of prominent forceps-like cerci at the end of the abdomen. These forceps are among their most distinctive features and are used for defense, mating, prey handling, and communication. Males often have larger and more curved cerci than females.
The head bears chewing mouthparts and long, segmented antennae. Most species are brown, reddish-brown, or dark brown in coloration, providing effective camouflage in their natural habitats. Many species possess short leathery forewings that protect folded membranous hind wings, although some species rarely fly despite having functional wings.
Forficulidae undergo incomplete metamorphosis, developing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. A notable characteristic of the family is maternal care. Females guard and clean their eggs, protect newly hatched nymphs, and may remain with their offspring during early development.
Feeding habits are primarily omnivorous. Members of Forficulidae feed on decaying plant matter, fungi, algae, flowers, fruits, seeds, and a variety of small invertebrates. Many species are beneficial predators that consume aphids, mites, and other soft-bodied insects, helping to control pest populations.
The family includes well-known genera such as Forficula, Doru, and Apterygida, representing a wide range of ecological adaptations and distributions.
Ecologically, Forficulidae plays an important role in decomposition, nutrient recycling, and biological control. They contribute to ecosystem balance as both scavengers and predators and serve as prey for numerous animals. Although some species may occasionally damage crops, flowers, or fruits, most earwigs are beneficial and valuable components of terrestrial ecosystems.
