Genus Eparchus

Eparchus is a genus of earwigs within the subfamily Opisthocosmiinae (Family Forficulidae, Order Dermaptera). Members of this genus are primarily distributed in tropical regions of Asia, including Southeast Asia, where they inhabit forests, plantations, gardens, and other humid environments rich in leaf litter and shelter.

Earwigs of the genus Eparchus are generally medium-sized and possess the characteristic elongated, flattened body typical of the family Forficulidae. Their coloration is usually dark brown to reddish-brown, allowing them to blend effectively with bark, soil, and decaying vegetation. The abdomen ends in a pair of well-developed forceps-like cerci, which are often more curved and robust in males than in females.

The head bears chewing mouthparts and long, segmented antennae that are used for sensing the environment. Like most earwigs, Eparchus species are primarily nocturnal and spend daylight hours hidden beneath bark, logs, stones, or within leaf litter.

Development occurs through incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females exhibit parental care by guarding eggs and protecting newly hatched nymphs, a behavior characteristic of many earwigs.

Feeding habits are generally omnivorous. Eparchus species consume decaying plant material, fungi, algae, fruits, and a variety of small invertebrates. They may also prey on soft-bodied arthropods such as aphids and other small insects, contributing to natural pest regulation.

Although detailed biological information is limited for many species within the genus, their ecology is believed to be similar to that of other tropical forficulid earwigs, with an important role in decomposition and nutrient cycling.

Ecologically, Eparchus contributes to the breakdown of organic matter and helps regulate populations of small invertebrates. As both scavengers and opportunistic predators, these earwigs are valuable components of tropical ecosystems and play a role in maintaining ecological balance.
