Subgenus Cyclotropus
Cyclotropus is a subgenus within the genus Prosopocoilus (Tribe Lucanini, Subfamily Lucaninae, Family Lucanidae, Order Coleoptera). Members of this group are distributed mainly in South and Southeast Asia, where they inhabit tropical and subtropical forests rich in decaying wood. Like other stag beetles, they are closely associated with mature woodland habitats that provide suitable breeding and feeding resources.
Beetles belonging to the subgenus Cyclotropus are generally medium to large in size and possess the robust body form typical of stag beetles. Males often exhibit enlarged mandibles, although their shape and development vary among species. These mandibles are primarily used during contests with rival males for access to mates and feeding sites. Females are usually smaller and have shorter, stronger mandibles adapted for feeding and substrate manipulation.
The body is typically dark brown, chestnut, reddish-brown, or black, with a smooth and strongly sclerotized exoskeleton. The antennae terminate in a characteristic lamellate club, a defining feature of stag beetles. Strong legs equipped with hooked claws enable adults to climb tree trunks and branches efficiently.
The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Larvae are large, cream-colored grubs that develop within decaying wood, rotting stumps, and decomposing roots. The larval stage may last several years before pupation occurs within a chamber constructed in the decomposing substrate.
Adults are generally nocturnal and are frequently attracted to tree sap, fermenting fruit, and other sugary food sources. During the breeding season, males may engage in ritualized combat using their mandibles to dislodge competitors.
Ecologically, Cyclotropus species play an important role in forest ecosystems through their contribution to wood decomposition and nutrient recycling during the larval stage. They also serve as prey for birds, mammals, reptiles, and predatory insects. Their dependence on mature forests and deadwood habitats makes them valuable indicators of forest health and biodiversity.
