Genus Catharsius

Catharsius is a genus of true dung beetles within the tribe Coprini (Subfamily Scarabaeinae, Family Scarabaeidae, Order Coleoptera). Species of this genus are distributed primarily throughout Africa and Asia, with the highest diversity occurring in tropical and subtropical regions. They inhabit forests, grasslands, savannas, agricultural fields, and woodland ecosystems, where they are closely associated with the dung of large mammals.

Beetles of the genus Catharsius are generally medium to very large in size and are among the most robust dung beetles. They possess a broad, convex body with a heavily sclerotized exoskeleton that is usually glossy black, dark brown, or metallic blue-black. Males often exhibit striking horns or raised projections on the head and pronotum, while females typically have smaller or reduced horns. These structures are used in combat between males competing for nesting tunnels and access to mates.

Like most members of the tribe Coprini, Catharsius species are tunneling dung beetles (paracoprids). Adults excavate deep tunnels beneath or adjacent to fresh dung and transport portions of it underground. The dung is formed into brood masses within separate chambers, where females lay individual eggs. This behavior protects the developing larvae from predators, desiccation, and environmental fluctuations.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The C-shaped larvae feed exclusively on the dung stored within the brood chamber until they complete development and pupate in the soil before emerging as adults.

Adults are primarily nocturnal and are attracted to fresh dung from a variety of mammals, including wild herbivores, livestock, and occasionally omnivores. Their powerful forelegs are specially adapted for digging, enabling them to excavate extensive tunnel systems efficiently.

Ecologically, Catharsius beetles are highly important decomposers and ecosystem engineers. By burying dung, they accelerate nutrient recycling, improve soil structure and fertility, increase water infiltration, reduce breeding sites for pest flies and parasites, and contribute to the secondary dispersal of seeds contained within dung. They also serve as prey for birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and predatory insects. Their dependence on healthy mammal populations and undisturbed habitats makes them valuable indicators of ecosystem integrity and biodiversity.
